Flowering fruits and bulbs

Warm days mean the fruit bushes and trees are starting to flower. The apple tree that never yields any apples is beginning to show flower buds. I gave it a good pruning this year to see if I could jump-start from fruiting.

In better news, the Saskatoon bush our front is full of blossoms. It has always given us a few berries but it looks like it has reached a big enough size to start making a significant contribution to our freezer.

Around the side, the tulips are in full bloom while the perennials are coming up behind them.

I bought a bike trailer a few days ago and last night we did our weekly grocery run by bike. Wow, is this ever easier than trying to use panniers and backpacks.

This morning we're off to the farmers market and then to forage some wild asparagus in the valley. Rain is predicted for the weekend which the garden could really use. If it rains, I'm going to try and finish a couple of books I'm reading on making apple cider.

    1. Thanks, me too. I have been reading about juice, sweet cider, hard cider, applejack, cider syrup, cider jelly and cider jelly pie. Much of this looks like winter work (in that it requires cider first) but is quite exciting to think about.

  2. LOVE the bike trailer! What a great idea. You're right about those saskatoons... they DO like they are going to start producing well for you. Ours are too small to contribute just yet - maybe next year.

I've been really eager for the rain - it keeps threatening, but never actually amounting to anything. Our barrels are empty and we can't use our well water on the garden as it's too high in sulphur and sodium - bad for the soil!

    1. Yes, the lack of moisture is tough when things should be germinating! I feel lucky to have city water as my barrels are dry as well. I see one of the raspberry plants in my hedge of thorn has kicked it so I'm going to plant another saskatoon (since saskatoons seem to be doing well there and who am I to second guess nature).
